Before & After: Paver Patio Installation in Palm City

From Bare Yard to Outdoor Living Space

Paver installation in Palm City can completely transform how you use your outdoor space. This project started with a homeowner who had a large, underused backyard -- mostly patchy grass and bare soil behind a pool cage. The goal was simple: create a functional patio area for outdoor dining and entertaining without losing the low-maintenance feel they wanted.

Domi Landscape designed and installed a 280-square-foot paver patio with a complementary walkway connecting the back door to the pool deck. Here is how the project came together from start to finish.

The Starting Point

The backyard had several challenges that are common across Palm City properties:

  • Poor drainage -- Water pooled near the foundation after heavy rains
  • Compacted fill soil -- The lot was graded during construction but never amended
  • No defined outdoor space -- The area behind the pool cage was unused
  • Overgrown edges -- Landscaping beds had been neglected for several seasons

The homeowners wanted a patio large enough for a dining table and four chairs, with a clean transition from the back door and a path to the pool area. They preferred a neutral color palette that would complement the home's beige stucco exterior.

Design and Material Selection

We recommended large-format concrete pavers in a warm gray tone, laid in a running bond pattern. This pattern provides a clean, modern look while being structurally sound for the sandy soil conditions typical in Martin County.

Material choices for this project:

  • Paver type -- Tremron Stonehurst in Sierra blend (12" x 24" format)
  • Border -- Matching 6" x 12" soldier course in charcoal for definition
  • Base -- 6 inches of compacted limerock over geotextile fabric
  • Sand -- Polymeric sand for joints (prevents washout and weed growth)

The large format pavers reduce the number of joints, which means less maintenance over time and a cleaner appearance. For homeowners comparing options, see our detailed guide on pavers vs. concrete.

The Installation Process

Day 1: Demolition and Excavation

The crew removed existing sod and topsoil to a depth of 10 inches below finished grade. We also addressed the drainage issue by regrading the area to direct water away from the foundation toward a swale along the property line.

Day 2: Base Preparation

Six inches of compacted limerock was laid in two lifts, each compacted with a plate compactor. This step is where many budget contractors cut corners -- and it is exactly why their patios settle and shift within a year. A properly compacted base is non-negotiable in Florida's sandy conditions.

Day 3: Paver Installation

With the base level and firm, we laid a 1-inch sand screed and began setting pavers. The running bond pattern starts from the most visible edge (the back door threshold) and works outward. All cuts along the perimeter were made with a wet saw for clean, precise edges.

Day 4: Finishing

Polymeric sand was swept into all joints and activated with water. Edge restraints were secured with 10-inch spikes. The walkway connecting the patio to the pool deck was completed using the same materials and pattern for a seamless look.

Day 5: Landscaping

We added fresh landscaping along the patio border -- bromeliads, dwarf ixora, and muhly grass -- to soften the edges and create a natural frame for the hardscape. A thin layer of pine bark mulch completed the beds.

The Results

The finished patio gave the homeowners exactly what they wanted: a defined outdoor living space that feels intentional and well-built. The neutral gray pavers complement the house without competing with the pool cage or roofline.

Key outcomes from this project:

  • Drainage solved -- No more standing water near the foundation
  • Usable space -- The patio comfortably fits a 6-person dining set
  • Low maintenance -- Polymeric sand joints resist weeds and ant activity
  • Property value -- Hardscaping projects like this typically return 60-75% of their cost in home value

What This Project Cost

For a 280-square-foot patio with a 40-foot connecting walkway, the total installed price was approximately $6,800. This included demolition, excavation, base preparation, pavers, polymeric sand, edge restraints, and the planting along the borders.

Every project is different. Factors like access (can equipment reach the backyard?), existing conditions (is there concrete to remove?), and material choice all affect the final number.
